The Armory Show 2019: Mitchell Anderson

New York, USA, 7 - 10 March 2019

Zurich-based artist Mitchell Anderson uses found materials and images to explore disjointed narratives from historical, pop cultural and literary sources. For the Armory Show, Galerie Maria Bernheim presents new works by Anderson from a series of hand-embroidered wall hangings and hard edge abstraction paintings.

The embroideries continue a series Anderson began last year where he harnesses images and icons of unfulfilled social projects and seeks to complete them with a community of collaborators as they spend thousands of hours executing the works. Meditations on beliefs and desire, the resulting pieces’ bodies are created through the act of communal labor.

Similarly, Anderson’s series of Campaign Blanks, repurpose the existing to consider the present. The motifs are derived from templates for buttons for political campaigns a century ago, here re-envisioned as hard edge paintings that comment on the ossification and the possibilities of societal change.

Anderson’s work has been included in group and solo shows internationally, including Fri-Art Kunsthalle Fribourg, CH; MAMCO, Geneva, CH; Galerie Maria Bernheim, Zurich, CH; Galerie Max Mayer, Dusseldorf, DE.
