Galerie Maria Bernheim is delighted to be hosting the Prix HEAD Geneva – Galerie with a solo show of its recipient Melanie Akeret.
Presenting a new body of work, Akeret furthers her research into different media that allow for a conversation about painting without addressing the elephant in the room. Coming from different perspectives which do not ask the viewer the question the history of painting per se, but focus on a concept of subject matters, of a way of depicting them and above all questioning reproduction and copying.
The delicate drawings, almost invisible from afar force us to confront the works in a very frontal way, they retain a romantic feeling of contemplation yet all of them are filled with a sense of humor, close to memes or collages, it is almost always about the superimposition. In her installations, drawings are associated with actual images, creating a gap of interpretation and it is that exact discrepancy that the artist is interested in and that to her question pictorial hierarchies and point towards the economical and social backdrop of painting.
Melanie Akeret has recently been included in exhibitions at Swiss Institute New York, NY, USA, Silicon Malley, Lausanne CH, Lang + Pult, Zurich CH, FriArt Kunsthalle, Fribourg CH, Palazzina, Basel CH, Wallriss, Fribourg CH and Forde, Geneva CH.
